Ohio Title Help
Lost the Title? Selling a Junk Car in Cleveland, OH
Ohio buyers need the title in your name. Yours is lost, torn, or still shows a lien from 2009. Here is exactly how that gets fixed, and then we buy the car.
What Ohio Actually Requires
A lot of junk car websites hint that they will take a car without a title. In Ohio that is not how it works for a licensed buyer, and it is not how it works for us. A scrap buyer needs the certificate of title in the seller's name, signed over at the sale. Ohio has no owner-side derelict or no-title route the way some other states do. So the honest version of this page is short: if the title is gone, you replace it first, and then we buy the car.
Replacing it is a smaller job than most people expect. The form is BMV 3774, the Application for Certificate of Title to a Motor Vehicle, filed at any Cuyahoga County Clerk of Courts Auto Title office. The state charges $15 for a duplicate; the county can add a small fee, so bring a little more. You need a photo ID and the VIN or the plate number. Most people walk out with the duplicate the same visit.
The downtown title office is at 2079 E. 9th St., third floor, about four blocks from our office on Superior. There are branches at 12100 Snow Road in Parma, 22121 Rockside Road in Bedford, and 27029 Brookpark Extension in North Olmsted. Pick whichever is closest to where the car sits, and check the hours before you go.

What's Included
Lost Ohio Title
The most common case. BMV 3774 at any Cuyahoga County title office gets you a duplicate for the $15 state fee plus whatever the county adds. Bring ID and the VIN, and tell us when you have it in hand so the pickup can be booked.
Old Lien on the Record
A loan paid off in 2009 can still show on the title. The lender issues a lien release; some do it the same day by email, some take weeks. Only the lienholder can clear it. We tell you what to ask them for so it happens on the first call.
Inherited Car
A car in a late parent's name goes through an estate transfer before it can be sold. The title office will want the death certificate and the probate or affidavit paperwork. Call us first and we tell you exactly what they will ask for.
Out-of-State Title
A Michigan or Pennsylvania title works fine if it is in your name. If it is lost, the duplicate comes from that state, not Ohio. We have bought plenty of cars that moved here with their owners and never got retitled.
Which Title Problem Do You Have?
The common cases around Cleveland, what fixes each one, and whether we can buy the car once it is sorted.
| What happened to the title | Normal fix | Will we buy it? |
|---|---|---|
| Ohio title lost, car in your name | Duplicate on BMV 3774 at a Cuyahoga title office, $15 state fee | Yes, once you have it |
| Title torn, washed out, chewed by the dog | Duplicate on BMV 3774, hand in what is left of the old one | Yes |
| Paid-off lien still printed on the title | Get the lien release from the lender, then BMV 3774 if you also need a duplicate | Yes, after the release |
| Car was a parent's or spouse's, they have passed | Estate transfer first; call us and we tell you what the title office will ask for | Usually, after transfer |
| Titled in another state | Sell on the other state's title; if that one is lost, the duplicate comes from that state | Usually, call first |
| Title in someone else's name, no paperwork | Not fixable from our side; the owner has to sign or transfer | No |
| Car left on your property by somebody else | That is an abandoned-vehicle process through the city or police, not a sale | No |
Form numbers and the $15 state duplicate fee are as published for Ohio. County fees and processing times are set by the Cuyahoga County Clerk of Courts and can change, so confirm when you go in.
Why Sellers Pick Us
The Phone Price Holds
Describe the car honestly and the figure we give you on the call is what the driver pays on Superior Avenue or out in Strongsville. We don't go finding new problems once you've already moved the good car to the street.
Free Tow Anywhere in the County
Westlake to Euclid, Bay Village to Solon, the tow is on us. Nothing comes off the price for the truck, the winch, or the forty minutes it takes to get a car out from behind a garage in Parma.
We Know the Title Office
The Cuyahoga County title office on E. 9th Street is a few blocks from our door. Lost title, lien that was paid off years ago, car in a late parent's name, we tell you exactly what to bring and which form to ask for.
Winter Is Not a Problem
A car that died in January and froze to the driveway still gets picked up. The driver brings a winch, skates and a shovel. Salt-rusted, no brakes, no steering, we have loaded worse off a tree lawn in Collinwood.
Title Situation Unclear?
Explain it on the call. You hear whether it can work before a truck is ever scheduled.
How It Works
1. Tell Us What You Have
Lost, damaged, lien, estate, or out-of-state, plus the car's age and where it sits. We tell you which route fits and whether it can work.
2. Get the Paper Sorted
A duplicate from the title office on BMV 3774, a lien release from the lender, or the estate paperwork. We explain exactly what to bring and which office is closest.
3. Book the Truck
Once the title is in your hand we schedule the pickup. Same-day is common inside Cleveland and the inner suburbs.
4. Sign and Get Paid
The driver checks ID and VIN against the title, you sign it over, you get paid, and the car leaves. Keep your plates and cancel the insurance.
Selling a Junk Car With a Lost Ohio Title: Common Questions
Where is the nearest Cuyahoga County title office?
Downtown at 2079 E. 9th St., third floor, Monday to Friday 8:30 to 4:30, phone (216) 443-8900. Branches are in Parma on Snow Road, Bedford on Rockside Road, and North Olmsted on Brookpark Extension. Check hours before you go; the branches run slightly different days and times.
How long does a duplicate Ohio title take?
Usually one visit. You fill out BMV 3774, show ID, pay the fee, and most people leave with the duplicate the same day. A lien that still shows on the record is the thing that slows it down, because the release has to come from the lender first.
Can I sell a car titled to someone else?
Only with the titled owner's signature, or with estate or power-of-attorney paperwork the title office accepts. If it was left on your property by someone else, that is an abandoned-vehicle process through the city, not something we can buy.
Will you buy the car without the title if I promise to get it later?
No. The title gets signed at the curb when the driver pays you, and it has to be in your name. Get the duplicate first, then call, and the pickup is usually the same day or the next.
